Filipe Matzembacher

Filipe is a screenwriter and director who has realised several short films, television series, music videos and three feature films. Here, Filipe uses their experience in the film industry to propel our Film Production and Screen Acting students forward. Their focus is on directing and screenwriting, as well as teaching several "Films That Changed Us" classes. Off campus, you'll find Filipe either on a film set or in an art-house cinema.
Filipe Matzembacher is a director and screenwriter based in Germany and Brazil. With strong international recognition, their works received wide acclaim at festivals, awards and critics around the world. They deal with universal and contemporary themes, through engaging narratives, refined aesthetic and strong acting directing.
Their two first feature films were screened in more than one hundred festivals, receiving dozens of awards, including Best Film at the Berlinale Teddy Award, Best Film Berlinale Panorama CICAE award, Best Film and Best Script at the Rio IFF, among others. They have also directed TV series, music videos and other TV content. In 2019 they were part of the Queer Palm Jury at the Cannes FF.
As a teacher, Filipe has already taught as a regular or given workshops in graduations of actors and filmmakers in several countries, in prestigious institutions. These include the International School of Film and Tv in Cuba, Filmuniversität Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF, Université Paris Cité and Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil). As of 2022, Filipe is bringing their wealth of experience in both practice and tuition to Catalyst.
