Since we kicked off Dialogues back in January 2016, we've hosted three series of panel talks on a wealth of topics important to our creative community. The aim: to affect positive change in the industry. From women in music production, to mental health and creativity, to diversity, scroll down to discover our coverage of each of the insightful events.
Season 3
Diversity
In our third Dialogues season, we dived into diversity. Our school has become a second home for students from nearly 60 different countries, each representing many more cultures, traditions and identities. With every person a door to a different world, it presents a unique opportunity to learn new perspectives, and combine them to create amazing things. However, diversity is not without its challenges. When does diversity become culture clash? What impact do these different identities have on creative output? And are we, in the creative industries, fostering an environment that gives space to all these voices? Find out more about each of the events below.
Why Does Identity Matter?
Katarina Becic – Head of Social Channels at Ableton and an ambassador for Keychange – joins our students, alumni and tutors to tackle the topic of identity and why it's so important to creative people.
Can You Copyright Culture?
Our students discuss cultural appropriation with the award-winning writer and psychologist of Native and African-American heritage Red Haircrow, along with Dutch producer Charlton Ravenberg and cultural advocate and intercultural negotiation specialist Cavana Hazelton.
Does Your Story Need to be Told?
Berlin Feminist Film Week’s Karin Fornander and Kemi Fatoba from DADDY Magazine joined our students to discuss diversity and representation during the final event of our public Dialogues series on diversity.
Season 2
Mental Health & Creativity
In our second Dialogues series, we talked about mental health in the creative industries. How does mental health affect the lives and future careers of our students? Do they have the tools to support themselves and others? What can we do as an industry to change the narrative? The panel discussions focused on four particularly pertinent topics within our community. Discover what we learnt below.
Self-Medicating and Harm Reduction
Journalist Anna Codrea-Rado leads a discussion with a panel of our students on the potential pitfalls of Berlin's 24/7 clubbing scene, and what we can do to consciously counteract them.
The Myth of the Tortured Artist
Rick Warden, an independent film producer and former Film Lead for the UK Mental Health Foundation, joins our student and tutor panel as the facilitator, to help us dissect the complex relationship between mental health and art.
Living With Others
We unravel the challenges of looking after your own mental health while living with others. Ableton Artist Relations Manager Christa Walley joins us as facilitator, while singer and composer Lyra Pramuk, and philosophical advisor and coach Florian Goldberg, join two of our music students on the panel.
Industry and Environment
Francine Gorman, a content producer and music consultant, joins us to talk about how the creative industries can create a better environment for artists. Director of external affairs for Help Musicians UK, Christina Brown, joins our student and tutor panel.

Season 1
Women in Music Production
In our first Dialogues series, in conjunction with female:pressure, we addressed the issue of low female-to-male student ratios in music production education. Why aren’t more women studying music production? What effect does this have on the learning experience? And what can we do about it? Over four panel discussions, the series opened up the conversation. Learn more about the individual sessions below.
